Join Glenda A. Thornton, book artist and former Director of Cleveland State University’s Michael Schwartz Library, as she explores the history of early people's use of various common fibers and how, over the centuries, their discoveries led to the development of textiles, expanded and improved writing materials, and ultimately, were incorporated into the making of books. Interestingly, many of the tools and techniques developed for use with textiles were also used in the construction of books. We will also physically examine many different types of raw fibers and their properties, along with some of the different writing materials and fabrics created from them, including book cloth.
